The 1998 Gentil Burg is a field blend - produced from an assortment of varietals harvested and vinified together. Fresh herbs and candied oranges can be found in its delightful aromatics. This medium to full-bodied, rich, broad, yet elegant wine is packed with mineral slate, spiced pear, roses, red berries, and juniper berries. In the past, Alsatians would often make 'field blends' - an assemblage of the different types of vines located on a given terroir. Presently, there appears to be a revival taking place. One of the field blends produced by Jean-Michel Deiss is the 1996 Gentil du Burg. It reveals intensely ripe scents reminiscent of assorted herbal liqueurs topped off with cinnamon cream. Its nose is more evolved than I would have imagined for such a young wine. On the palate it is medium-bodied, focused, immensely expressive, velvety-textured, and densely packed with super-ripe, spicy white fruits.
