There was no 2019 made, as Laure Colombo felt the vintage yielded a wine that was too hot and without the balance she's seeking. But the 2020 Cornas Vallon de l'Aigle is reassuringly excellent, a crisp, structured effort that should age well for at least two decades. Cracked pepper and ripe blackberries appear on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied and shows ample concentration and the finish is firmly tannic but ripe, mouthwatering and long.

Quite rich, with layers of warmed a?aí and blueberry reduction rolling through, laced with dark olive, tobacco and sweet bay notes. A tarry edge rumbles on the finish, giving this a very grippy feel. Not bottled every vintage, the 2018 Cornas Vallon de l'Aigle looks worthy of the name. From a single parcel of old, south-facing vines, it seamlessly marries herbal nuances of mint and licorice with dark berries and grilled beef into a harmonious, savory bouquet. Full-bodied but fresh and silky, it's deceptively easy to drink. It finishes long with a dusting of cedar and crushed stone.

This is youthfully rugged, with lots of bay leaf, cedar and wet stone notes forming a broad-edged frame around a core of steeped bitter plum, dark currant and tar flavors. A long cast iron element smolders through the finish. Offers an alluring old-school hint. For the cellar.
