A terrific effort from the Buisson brothers, the 2020 Saint-Romain Sous Roches bursts with scents of wild berries, plums, loamy soil and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, saline finish, it transcends expectations of the appellation.

More reserved than the younger-vine Combe Bazin bottling, the Buisson brothers' 2019 Saint-Romain Sous Roches is superb, unwinding in the glass with notes of plums, red berries, rose petals and sweet soil tones. It's medium-bodied, deep and mineral, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and lively acids. It will merit at least a year or two of patience.

The 2018 Saint-Romain Sous Roches has turned out beautifully, mingling aromas of plums and wild berries with hints of undergrowth, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's bright and lively, with a crunchy core of fruit and chalky but refined structuring tannins. This excellent wine will reward at least a year or two of bottle age with real plenitude and expression.

From a three-hectare parcel planted with old massal selection Pinot Noir, the 2017 Saint-Romain Sous Roches offers up aromas of raspberries, rich soil tones and a very discrete framing of toasty oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and open-knit palate that displays more volume and powdery structuring tannin than the Combe Bazin bottling.
