Domaine Hatzimichalis Lefkos Multivarietal Fine Classic Hatzimichalis

The 2009 LEFKOS MULTIVARIETAL “FINE CLASSIC - HATZIMICHALIS” is a kitchen sink blend of Greek grapes, Robola (50%), Athiri (25%), Assyrtiko (10%) and various others for the remainder. Tank fermented, it comes in at just 12%. It is usually a nice value from this winery, and is again this year. Lively and refreshing, aromatic and with a touch of lemons on the finish, it is on the lighter side, but reasonably persistent on the finish, flavorful and well balanced. It is nice warm weather choice. Note that this and the “Lefkos (“white”) Domaine Hatzimichalis” reviewed this issue have very similar names, as they are both multivarietal whites with “Lefkos” and some variation of Hatzimichalis prominently displayed. To more readily distinguish them on paper, I’ve added “Fine classic” to the name here (which is part of the label). For visual cues, note also that this is the yellow label with the bird on it while the “Lefkos Domaine Hatzimichalis” also reviewed this issue is the white label with the winery drawing on it. Drink it young for best results. It is at peak now, however long it technically holds. Drink now-2012. Hatzimichalis makes a wide variety of brands, and dabbles extensively in international grapes like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. They have a pretty nice touch with those grapes—although I thought their Chards were a bit better in the last round of reviews. I’m sure they will take flack for their focus on international grapes rather than indigenous ones. The lower level wines are usually very nice values, though.
