Faiveley believes the 1990s are the finest wines the firm has produced in several decades. Consumers will be happy to know that not only is there a bevy of top wines, but many of them are priced below what Faiveley the last two vintages. The international recession has hit Burgundy as hard as Bordeaux, so it is not surprising to see many producers cut prices by as much as 40% in order to sell their wines. Of course, much of these savings is lost to Americans because of our pathetically weak dollar.This firm offers a strong line-up of grands crus from the Cote de Nuits. The Clos de la Roche, while less impressive than the other wines, is attractive, with its moderately intense, earthy, red fruit-scented nose, elegant, light style, and long, soft finish. The Clos de la Roche has a wonderful forward, soft, supple texture and smooth finish. It is amazingly easy to drink now, and for that reason it should be drunk over the next 6-7 years.

The Clos de la Roche, which is aged in 70% new oak casks (as are all the Grands Crus from Faiveley), showed the cinnamon-like, earthy, mineral and blackberry fruitiness typical of this great Grand Cru vineyard. Very long on the palate with the well-delineated, crisp flavors, medium to full body, and good tannins in the finish, this wine may well merit an outstanding rating in 2 to 3 years. It should certainly last for another 10 years.
