The 2009 Morey St. Denis en la Rue de Vergy is a beautifully precise, linear wine. The fruit shows terrific focus and length on the mid-palate, while the finish presents the more ethereal side to the wine. This is a touch firm, but quite pretty. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. This is a beautiful set of wines from Bruno Clair. Every wine I tasted with Clair’s longtime oenologist Philippe Brun was gorgeous from top to bottom. While the top 2009s are certainly superb, the real jewels here are the village level wines which appear to be among the great success stories of the 2009 vintage. I tasted all of the wines from barrel, except the Marsannay and Marsannay Les Vaudanelles, both of which were bottled before the 2010 harvest. In 2009 Clair began harvesting on September 15 and ended on the 23rd. I also tasted a handful of 2008s, from a much later harvest that stretched into October. The medium-to-dark ruby-colored Morey-St.-Denis En La Rue Vergy's nose was totally muted when I tasted it but it revealed thick, velvety-textured dark fruits with earthy and minerally notes ensconced in a highly structured, masculine medium body. Big and slightly tannic, this wine will be at its best between 2002-2006.This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.The Marsannay appellation, the northernmost of the Cote d'Or, in reality a suburb of Dijon, is only known to the Burgundy cognoscenti, but on these hillsides Clair makes some of Burgundy's finest values. In '95, a hail storm on July 23 damaged Clair's grapes in Marsannay, popping some berries open and threatening the onset of rot. However, subsequent rain storms washed the broken berries from the vines leaving only the healthy ones. His yields were significantly reduced because of this occurrence (a mere 22 hectoliters/hectare), but Clair's wines are clean.Importer: Vineyard Brands, Chester, VT; tel. (802) 875-2139.

For one of the more enthusiastically run Burgundy domaines, Bruno Clair's 1991s are a major disappointment. They lack color, concentration, and richness, and are dominated by excessively high tannins that make all these wines, save for the soft, light-bodied 1991 Marsannay-Les Longeroies, hollow, harsh, tough, and devoid of charm and finesse. One can only speculate on how the 1991 harvest was handled by Bruno Clair, but he is far more talented and conscientious than these wines suggest. Even allowing for the fact that they may have been tasted at an ungraceful period of development, their light ruby colors and the severity of their tannins are unfortunate.
