The dark ruby-colored 1995 Meritage reveals blackberry and fresh herb aromas. This precise, well-made, and concentrated wine has excellent concentration, intensity, and balance, as well as a silky-smooth texture. Its flavor profile, dominated by cassis and black cherries, is less oaky and it has a longer finish. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2008.Chateau Ste. Michelle's wines are for the most part beautifully made, well-structured and well-defined. The medium-to-dark ruby-colored 1994 Meritage, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, exhibits a slightly muted dark berry, oak and Asian spice nose as well as a sweet cassis and vanilla-flavored character. This refined, somewhat crafted and "international-styled" wines' pasty tannins did not appeal to me, yet the quality of its beautifully ripe fruit is undeniable. Chateau Ste. Michelle's 1993 Meritage is presented in a tall, heavy glass with a designer label. The wine's dark ruby color is followed by attractive aromas of spice and vanillin, but it possesses an austere, tart personality (because of aggressive acidity), which makes the tannin seem more astringent. A low PH gives the wine an angularity and sinewy feel on the palate. Although this winery has turned out some very fine products, it has gone too far (in my opinion) in turning out politically correct wines following a specific formula.
