The 2009 Sao, a blend of 50% Garnacha, 40% Syrah and 10% Carinena from 20- to 50-year-old vines, sees no oak aging. It offers ripe, brambly black fruit mixed with forest floor on the “natural” nose, which is well-defined and attractive. The palate is crisp and clean on the entry, with ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit. Underneath there are fine, quite rigid tannins that lead to an impressive, rather stern finish that leaves you wanting to take another sip.
