The 2008 Terlaner Riserva Nova Domus is big, rich and expansive. Layers of rich, tropical fruit are buffered by vibrant acidity in this broad-shouldered, expressive white. I especially like the way the wine blossoms on the mid-palate and finish. Early tertiary notes have begun to develop in the bottle, but the 2008 still has many years of fine drinking ahead of it. The Nova Domus is a classic blend of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, aged in casks and smaller French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. These new releases from Cantina di Terlano are impressive. The 2007 Terlaner Riserva Nova Domus is a touch compact in this vintage. The Nova Domus never really blossoms in the way the estate’s best wines usually do. Instead it remains rather lean, with limited expressiveness in its white peaches, pears and mint. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. The most impressive wines I tasted this year from Alto Adige came from Cantina di Terlano. Simply put, these are reference point wines. The 2006 Terlaner Riserva Nova Domus offers up mango, passion fruit, flowers and spices in a generous, expansive style. The Nova Domus needs time, but the character and sheer pedigree are remarkable. The 2005 Terlaner Nova Domus is 60% Pinot Blanc, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc that spent 12 months in oak, equal parts cask and smaller French oak barrels. The Sauvignon aromatics dominate the bouquet, but on the palate the Pinot Blanc fruit and texture come through beautifully. As outstanding as Terlano’s blends can be, I tend to gravitate towards the mono-varietal wines, which offer a higher degree of expression. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014. Cantina di Terlano is a reference-point producer for fine wines in Alto Adige. This cooperative’s entry-level bottlings are reviewed in Issue 178.
