Here is a well-priced dessert wine that is sweet but not too sweet. The 2016 Moscadello di Montalcino (with 8,580 bottles made) shows soft residual sugar with aromas of candied almond, orange peel and dried apricot. Thanks to that fruity sweetness, the wine only measures 10.5% in terms of alcohol, so you can drink it with fruit tarts or panna cotta. Those bright fruit tones are followed by brief interludes of dried mint and rosemary.

The 2015 Moscadello di Montalcino Vendemmia Tardiva (with 3,150 500-milliliter bottles produced) is a rare and precious wine that speaks to the storied past traditions of Montalcino when production of Moscadello grossly outpaced that of Brunello. Today, only a handful of producers continue to make this wine, and I suspect those numbers will continue to decline. Indeed, this year I only received six samples of Moscadello di Montalcino (two of which were made by Capanna). Five years ago, there were double that number of samples to review. This wine delivers sun-drenched aromas of candied fruit, honey and candied apricot. The mouthfeel is silky, long, perfumed and delicately sweet.

The 2013 Moscadello di Montalcino exhibits musky aromas of white flower and fuzzy peach with orange peel and candied fruit. Made from late-harvest fruit, the 2010 Moscadello di Montalcino is a precious dessert wine with a deep amber color and delightful aromas of candied fruit, honey and toasted almond. The mouthfeel is viscous and rich but there's enough acidity on the close to keep the palate refreshed. I loved that distant taste of toasted pine nut on the close. Drink: 2014-2024.
