Deeper and richer, the 2011 Syrah Verna’s Vineyard, which was fermented with 70% whole cluster, shows a more masculine, gamey profile with layers of mineral-tinged red fruit, charcoal, pepper and hints of crushed flowers to go with a medium-bodied, polished and elegant mouthfeel. Really showing the vintage, it should be extremely long-lived, yet will benefit from another year or two in the cellar and drink nicely through 2019. Drink 2014-2019.

Centered on ripe berry and spicy peppery notes that are deep and persistent, this firms midpalate and ends with a spicy, layered finish and good length. The tannins are chewy. Drink now through 2022. 367 cases made

The 2011 Syrah Verna’s Vineyard is absolutely gorgeous in this vintage. Rose petal, mint, dried flowers, orange peel and exotic spices are woven together in a wine of exquisite grace, complexity and nuance. There is so much going on in the glass. Bright plum and red cherry add punch to the juicy, expressive finish. The combination of hillside parcels, impeccable farming, 75% whole clusters and inspired winemaking inform a wine that overachieves for the year. This is a fabulous showing from Craig Jaffurs.
