A whole different beast, the 2010 Syrah Verna’s Vineyard (100% Syrah aged in 25% new French oak for 22-months) is incredibly gamey and perfumed, with loads of spiced red and black fruits, ground pepper, hung game, garrigue and floral notes all emerging from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, with a voluptuous, soft texture, beautiful transparency and a clean, lengthy finish, it is a superb Syrah that will thrill for 7-8 years, possibly longer. Drink now-2020.

A distinctly overripe quality comes through in the 2010 Syrah Verna’s Vineyard. Heat spikes generally weren’t an issue for Syrah in 2010 because of the relatively late-ripening cycle for the year, so I am inclined to think this fruit came in a little later than ideal. Jaffurs used 40% whole clusters and aged the 2010 mostly in neutral oak, with 25% new barrels. Drinking window: 2013 – 2017

California’s warm, dry summers are the star of this wine. They have given it lusciously ripe, opulent blackberry, cherry, plum, currant and cassis flavors. For all the richness, the wine is balanced in a tension of tannins and acidity, and the finish is totally dry. Young and vibrant now, it will develop additional complexities over the next six years.
