I tasted Rene Leclerc's bottled 1993s twice. They are powerful, rich, concentrated red Burgundies that should age well for 10-12+ years. The two scores given for the Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moine and Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques represent Leclerc's regular cuvee and a special cuvee made from specific barrels selected by North Berkeley Wine and bottled with neither fining nor filtering. Both of the North Berkeley wines exhibited much sweeter, richer, more fleshy palates, with greater depth, ripeness, and intensity. The regular bottlings, although very good efforts for the vintage, exhibited more tannin and astringency. Both of these wines exhibit considerable body, richness, and outstanding potential. Both require 3-4 years of cellaring and should keep for 12-15 years. As complicated as Burgundy already is, the special bottlings requested by certain American importers add to the confusion.
