The 2001 Shiraz is tight, closed, dense, and monolithic, but promising. It possesses pure blackberry fruit intermingled with white pepper, chocolate, and wood notes. A sleeper as well as a very good value, the 2001 Shiraz/Cabernet Redstone (80% of the former and 20% of the latter) exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and an elegant, concentrated style revealing copious quantities of blackberry and cherry fruit along with hints of cassis, leather, vanilla, and licorice. Medium-bodied and richly fruity, with soft, well-integrated tannin, this luscious red will provide immense pleasure over the next 6-7 years. Why can’t California produce such well-made blends at this price?
