The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain (2,411 cases) exhibits a big, spicy, smoky nose with plenty of plum, raisin, and black currant fruit. Evolved and complex, with a supple texture as well as resiny pine forest notes intermixed with black currants and sweet cherries, this distinctive, singular Cabernet may be controversial, but it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 5-7 years. Here’s a textbook Napa Cab. It’s concentrated in black currant flavors, with the best tannic structure money can buy. Soft and elegant in the mouth, with a long, elegant finish. Could use some individuality, though, as it’s firmly in the international style.——S.H.(10/1/2005)—— 91
