The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne opens to a black, inky color and super concentration that adds weight and consistency to the palate. Pian delle Vigne is very obviously executed in an international style with etched oak tones paired next to overtly jammy fruit. With time, this wine has also developed a mature tertiary bouquet with spiced beef jerky, mesquite wood and barbecue smoke. The aromas are so strong, they are almost too much to take in at once. There’s no denying however that the wine boasts solid foundations and good construction. What it lacks is the softer definition and lighter nuances of Brunello. It gives more of a bang, than it does a whimper. Decant for up to four hours. Drink: 2014-2028.

Cooked fruit, with blackberry jam and an earthy undertone. Full-bodied, with supersoft and velvety tannins. Very ripe and rich, with a long finish. There's so much fruit. Almost Porty. Why wait?—'99 Brunello blind retrospective (2009). Drink now. 15,000 cases made.

Lovely, with its own version of perfume exuding from the glass. Additional rose and berry notes lead to a silky palate featuring prune, flourless chocolate torte and coffee. The back end is tighter and heavier than the front, which bodes well for its future. Made in the modern style.
