The 2012 Malpaso is pure Syrah from an 18-20 year old vineyard on trellises outside the boundaries of Gredos in the Méntrida DO . The full clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts in open 1,500-liter vats and the wine aged for one year in French 500-liter barrels to produce 11,500 bottles. This is a completely different animal, as the Syrah character dominated to give it a profile that is between Northern Rh?ne (violets and smoke bacon) and New World (balsamic, aromatic herbs, hinting on eucalyptus). This results in a very showy and attractive nose. The palate is medium-bodied and shows good freshness with clean acidity and delineated, pure flavors This is a real pleasure to drink, and is a very good value. Bravo!
