The 2008 Malpaso is pure Syrah aged in 20% new and 80% old French oak, 30% without de-stemming. It has a lovely, intriguing bouquet of blackberry, fresh rose petals and minerals that is both sophisticated and appealing. The palate is well-balanced with succulent ripe blackberry and briary on the entry. There is a core of sweetness here, but it is counterbalanced by the crisp acidity and the stem addition lending it leafiness towards the controlled, refined, but flavor-packed finish. This is another superb wine from this producer. Drink now-2016.
Now here is a challenger to Jimenez-Landi’s crown but, hey, it is great to see two Mentrida growers giving the region such a good name. It was formed in 2004 by Alfonso Chacon y Belarmino Fernandez when they began acquiring parcels of Garnacha on unique terroirs. Their wines come highly recommended: natural, full of character and charm, Mentrida wines you want to contemplate and savor.
