During my visit to the ancient cellars at Cantina Terlano, we pulled out this magnificent bottle of the 1959 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco. This wine rocked my world. The fruit showed some minimal signs of oxidation, but it also displayed super intense aromas of honey, dried apricot and candied orange peel. Within just a few moments, you could recognize freshly shaved truffle, Pecorino cheese rind and crushed oystershell. The mouthfeel is gorgeous, with a creamy and generous texture. Yet there was enough balanced acidity to brighten my entire day. Despite its age, this wine is teaming with vibrant energy and life. I've assigned a 15-year drinking window here, but honestly, there is no way to measure the cellar aging potential of a wine that has already passed and surpassed the test of time. Congratulations to Cantina Terlano for safeguarding these precious bottles that are so important to the Italian wine patrimony.
