Perhaps my favorite Turley vineyard of all is the Hayne Vineyard, as it produces both superstar Zinfandels and Petite-Sirahs. The 1995 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard is again the superstar in a noteworthy portfolio. The harvest, six tons of fruit (from a six-acre vineyard), produced a wine that appears to be as powerful and rich as the 1994. I am tempted to say that Zinfandel does not get any better than this, but I could probably say that most red wines do not get much better than this. The opaque purple color is followed by gloriously levels of extraordinarily pure, sweet, cassis, kirsch, and pepper. The wine possesses an astonishing level of extract and ripe fruit. Despite its massiveness, full body, and loads of glycerin, it displays no sense of hotness or weightiness. It is a winemaking tour de force ... marvelously concentrated, gorgeously perfumed, and sensational in all respects. The finish lasts for 30 seconds. The 1995, which is more flattering and precocious than the 1994, is best drunk over the next decade. As all these offerings demonstrate, this is extraordinary winemaking! Along with its predecessors, this is undoubtedly one of the greatest Zinfandels I have ever tasted.
The 1995 Zinfandels are the products of extraordinary vineyards and genius winemaking - no doubt about it.
