The 2001 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard exhibits an extraordinarily complex, gamy, floral, forest floor-like nose reminiscent of a grand cru red Burgundy. The saturated ruby/purple color is accompanied by a beautifully pure, rich, full-bodied wine revealing considerable expansiveness as well as intensity. Aromas of black raspberries, forest floor, lilacs, and hints of strawberry jam and cherries are found in this top-class Pinot. It should evolve gracefully for 5-7 years. Tel. What a price, but what a wine. For starters, it’s huge in cherry compote flavors, drizzled with sweet mocha, vanilla and powdered sugar. That makes it sound like a dessert wine, but it’s dry, with rich, ripe tannins and firm acids. What it lacks in subtlety it more than makes up for in sheer decadence.——S.H.(4/1/2004)—— 93
