The gorgeous 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard (which has some of northern California’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines) displays abundant aromas of loamy soil, cedarwood, creme de cassis, black cherries, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and spice box. This dark ruby/purple-tinged, elegant, full-bodied 2005 reveals excellent equilibrium among all its component parts. Although still reserved and restrained, it is weighty in the mouth. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 25+ years. Now owned by the Gallo family, but still run by Michael Martini, the quality of these wines merits serious attention.Tel. A blend of 92.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.4% Petit Verdot, this potentially profound Monte Rosso Cabernet was aged in 100% new oak (90% French and 10% American). It even eclipsed the hotter vintage of 2004 in natural alcohol, coming in at 15.25%. Only 700 cases were produced. The wine is loaded, with an inky/blue/purple color as well as notes of graphite, damp earth, forest floor, lavender, creme de cassis, blackberries, and an atypical hint of chocolate. Dense, full-bodied and multilayered with fabulous upside potential, it can be drunk now if it is decanted, but promises to be even better in 20-25 years. A wow wine!

Gone are the big, hard tannins that used to mark Cabs from this vineyard. The ’05 is soft and smooth, allowing the lush black and red cherry, currant, licorice, teriaki beef and smoky cedar flavors to shine. This wine should develop nicely over the next decade.——S.H.(9/1/2009)—— 92
