What an intriguing red wine blend, the backbone of this St. Vincent Estate offering is Zinfandel from Montelena Vineyards that has been blended from Sangiovese in order to give the wine more aromatic dimension and complexity. It is a delicious, complex, full-bodied red with considerable character. The dark ruby/plum color is followed by aromas of red-cherries and berries (typical of Zinfandel), as well as blueberry and strawberry notes, suggestive of Sangiovese. Supple, round, and generous, with medium to full body, but not the weight one would expect from a wine surpassing 14% alcohol, this savory, silky-textured wine possess both finesse and elegance. A new item in the Montelena portfolio is St. Vincent, which replaces their Zinfandel. St. Vincent is a wine made from primarily Zinfandel, with some Sangiovese in the blend. I enjoyed the 1995 St. Vincent, which tips the scales at 14.1% alcohol. Sadly, only 700 cases will be available. A fleshy, medium ruby-colored wine with abundant quantities of strawberry and berry fruit, it is slightly fuller than the 1996, with better color saturation, as well as a smooth, silky texture.
