The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is one of those wines that seemingly benefitted from the warm vintage. The style is rich and opulent and there is enough layered oak spice and tannin to support the softer nature of the fruit. Ripe cherry, blackberry and dark plum abound. My only note of hesitation is sparked by the mouthfeel that is slightly thinner and shorter than past vintages. This Brunello is aged in a combination of botte grande and smaller oak barrel. The wine is fleshed out, approachable and almost ready to drink now. Some 160,000 bottles were produced. Drink: 2015-2020. Elisabetta Gnudi is an important force in Tuscan wine. The owner of Borgo Scopeto in Chianti Classico, she purchased Caparzo in 1999, soon followed by the acquisition of the adjacent property, the venerable Altesino, in 2003. I have always been a fan of her range of products and the honest pricing associated with them. This set of new release offers a good number of excellent value buys.
