A new offering for me, the 2007 Pinot Noir Jenkin's Ranch reveals aromas of apple skins, sassafras, underbrush, herbs, cloves, and subtle background oak. This is a medium-bodied, spicy, slightly tart style of Pinot to drink over the next 3-4 years. For the past twenty years, Patz and Hall has been one of California's finest negociant firms, accessing top quality fruit and vinifying and bottling their wines with minimal intervention. This is an amazing Pinot Noir. It showcases its classic vintage, yielding massive flavors of cherries and raspberries that are so rich and ripe, they approach liqueur. Yet the wine maintains a perfect balance of coastal acidity and fine tannins. Gorgeously oaked and smoky, it’s a beauty now, and should slide through the next 4–5 years.——S.H.(12/15/2009)—— 94
