The 2003 Finca Monasterio is Baron de Ley’s modern styled wine. It is 80% Tempranillo with the balance an assortment of other varietals. The wine was aged entirely in new oak. It is dark ruby/purple with a splendid perfume of crushed violets, pain grille, black currants, and blackberry liqueur. The wine is mouth-filling while retaining a fine sense of balance. This modern red wraps lush flavors of plum, dried cherry and toast in pillowy but ample tannins, with just enough acidity to keep it lively. Tobacco and mineral notes add interest. Drink now through 2011. 7,500 cases made.??–TM??Region: Spain / Rioja Select to Add

As per usual, this wine carries a leafiness and peppery quality that runs ahead of its fruit quotient. That doesn’t mean it’s a poor wine; but it emphasizes dry oak and saucy flavors as opposed to richness and ripeness.
