A disappointing performance from one of California's finest Merlot producers, St. Francis's 1986 Merlot smells identical to the kosher pickles I eat at New York's Carnegie Deli. Green aromas are followed by vegetal, Monterey County-like, bell pepper flavors. This lean, tannic, fruitless wine with a significant amber/rusty edged color is drying out. The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore.
