A late-released Chardonnay, the limited production 1994 Chardonnay South River Vineyard is a fabulous example of Russian River Chardonnay. Made from the Hanzell clone, and aged in 100% new oak casks, this rich, powerful, structured, ageworthy Chardonnay is loaded with extract, but is still backward and unevolved. As longtime readers know, I believe in drinking California Chardonnay within 2-3 years of the vintage, but this wine may prove to be the exception - a wine capable of lasting and improving for 7-8 years.Tom Rochioli, one of my 1995 winemakers of the year, continues to turn out a brilliant portfolio of wines from the family's well-placed vineyards in the Russian River Valley.
