The 2005 Pinot Noir Reed Vineyard is slightly more evolved than the previous two wines. Its sassafras, root vegetable, stemmy, earthy, plum and currant notes, as well as crisp acids, moderate tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel suggest that 2-3 years of additional bottle age are warranted. In retrospect, 2006 does not appear to be a very strong vintage for Calera Pinot Noir, but the wines are complex, approachable, and very Burgundian. In a completely different style, the more concentrated 2005s exhibit deeper color as well as more texture, depth, and length. Not showing much now, beyond good berry and orange fruit, smooth tannins and fine acidity. It’s a wine you’d easily bypass in a big tasting, in favor of a more muscular style. But then, showiness in youth has never been Calera’s forte. Should slowly gain bottle complexity over the years. Best 2010-2013.——S.H.(12/1/2008)—— 90
