The 2006 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Weitenberg – from relatively young vines in a clay-rich, water-retentive soil – is more fruit-dominated than most Gruner Veltliner in this vintage and was less affected by poor flowering. Notes of green bean and mirabelle rise from the glass. Luscious yellow plum and kiwi fruit tinged with green bean saturate the palate with subtle wet stone suggestions beneath. Pale green-yellow. The nose displays cantaloupe and mango over an elegant background of freshly crushed green peppercorn. Similar flavors in the mouth, along with a note of sweet banana and the framing influence of crisp, appley acidity. This powerful wine remains quite refreshing on the finish, showing lingering minerality. Drink now to 2014.
