The outstanding 1999 Barolo Falletto is a very firm garnet, with smoky clove, cinnamon, plum and cherry aromas and a heady, warming contribution from the alcohol. Its packed red and black fruit flavors, powerful structure, and the intensity and length which mark Nebbiolo from Serralunga, are the tell-tale signs of a classic in the making. Big-boned but not showing much flesh, this wine didn’t appear to be at its best when we tasted it, yet it was still impressive. Scents of rubber, tar and prunes, flavors of red berries and cherry tomatoes. Long finish that builds in intensity is a positive sign for aging. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2020.——W.E.(4/2/2004)—— 88
