The Zenato 2019 Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato is a soft, medium-bodied white wine with plenty of Golden Delicious apples and orchard fruit. The wine is textured and soft with enough acidity to make it all feel light and accessible, especially if fried shrimp or calamari are on the menu tonight. Production is 18,000 bottles.

The Zenato 2018 Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato is redolent of peach, baked apple and honeycomb. This medium-bodied wine from a 60-hectare vineyard site with clay soils is nicely textured and spicy. This wine paints a pretty portrait of the elaborate side of the Trebbiano di Lugana grape that is gaining in popularity. The Zenato family was one of the first to offer it. With handmade-looking paper labels, there were 18,000 numbered bottles released.

Packaged with a pretty paper label, the 2015 Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato delivers a rich and oxidative approach with ripe peach and apricot followed by honey, saffron and toasted almond. This is a medium-weight white wine that shares a similar textural richness and fullness that you might find in Chardonnay. There is a hint of sweetness on the close with some candied fruit.

The 2009 Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato, the estate’s top Lugana, is aged in French oak, which naturally gives the wine additional textural richness and volume. The 2009 Riserva needs time in the glass for some of its oakiness to blow off. When it does, the wine impresses for its impeccable texture and fabulous overall balance. The oak works well here, but I am not sure the Riserva is meaningfully better than the regular version, especially considering the price difference. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Zenato is one of the historic names in Valpolicella. The estate makes a wide range of wines, but truly excels with Amarone. A recent vertical tasting of Zenato’s Amarone Riserva Sergio Zenato going back to 1980 was eye-opening for many reasons, not the least of which was seeing just how well the wines age. Zenato’s 2008 Lugana Riserva Sergio Zenato is a pretty white laced with flowers, mint, white peaches and subtle oak.
