The old-vine 2012 Teixar is produced with the Peluda strain of the variety, sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1956. It's ripe and heady with notions of cooked fruit and Mediterranean herbs. The full-bodied palate revealed abundant, dusty tannins and moderate acidity. It could do with a little more freshness to compensate the high ripeness. But within the XXL style, it's quite good. 3,200 bottles.

The 2011 Teixar wears the subtitle 'Garnatxa Vella', old Garnacha in Catalan, as it's sourced from a plot of 60 year old vines planted with the 'hairy' strain of Garnacha, the Garnacha Peluda. It has a ripe nose of stewed berries and prunes with plenty of balsamic and spicy notes. It matured for one year in barrels, which might have imparted that chocolatey sensation that surrounds it. The palate is full-bodied, with abundant fine tannins and a slightly warm finish. It needs powerful dishes.

The 2010 Teixar is 100% old-vine Garnacha Peluda and feels a bit backward and closed, with a serious profile, shy balsamic notes of graphite and tar giving it an earthy bouquet. With time in the glass it slowly opens up and starts showing aromas of ripe damsons, black cherries and blueberries, with faint violets and sweet spice tones. The palate is medium to full-bodied with sweet fruit and spicy flavors, fine-grained tannins, good intensity and balancing acidity. A serious, big, powerful yet balanced Montsant. Drink 2015-2021. Vinyes Domenech is one of the up-and-coming new names of Montsant. The company is named after its organically farmed, 15-hectare property and is quite ecological-minded, as 90% of electricity used is from renewable sources and all their water comes from rain and other natural sources. Of course, all this would be just an anecdote if their wines were not very good. The vineyards are spread in different terraces (bancales) where the predominant soil is argilo-calcareous. The 2009 Teixar is pure Garnacha Peluda from 70-year-old vines that are aged in a combination of first, second and third year French oak for 14 months. It has a complex bouquet of beautifully defined red currant, wild strawberry, heather and lavender that blossom from the glass. The oak is very subtle, remaining quietly in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannins, great harmony and focus. Dark brambly red fruits, cranberry, minerals and a touch of white pepper all vie for attention but are supremely well-defined, while the pixilated finish has firm grip and a sense of symmetry. The 2008 Teixar is quite backward on the nose and will certainly require 2-3 hours decanting. It has a very well-defined bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry, quince, lavender and balsamic, although for me the 2009 has greater clarity. The palate is medium-bodied, with ripe supple tannins that lend it great weight but maintain fine balance with raspberry coulis, fresh strawberry, mulberry and allspice towards the sinewy finish.
