Vina Caliterra’s flagship is the 2008 Cenit, with assorted black fruit that titillates the nose. Plush, layered, and suave on the palate, this lengthy effort will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring and will deliver prime drinking from 2014 to 2023, if not longer. Cenit is one of Chile’s better known icon wines. The 2007 Cenit is made up of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Malbec, and 20% Petit Verdot. It displays a classy aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, incense, blackcurrant, and black cherry. Reminiscent of a quality classified growth Bordeaux, it has plenty of ripe fruit, a firm structure, and several years of aging potential. Heady, tight, piercing aromas are a good indication of the wine’s style and sense of attack. The palate is firm, acidic and driving but ultimately more basic and generic than individual or exciting. Caliterra’s flagship wine is the 2006 Cenit, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec, and 20% Petit Verdot (a variety playing an increasingly important role in Chile’s red blends). Cenit spent 18 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored and thick in appearance, it has a classy perfume of violets, scorched earth, pencil lead, blackcurrant, and blackberry. The 2005 Cenit is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, and 10% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-colored, it has a splendid perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, violets, black currant, and black cherry. This is followed by a full-bodied, nearly opulent wine. Dense and ripe, it has gobs of black fruit flavors and enough tannin to evolve for 3-5 years. Drink this lengthy effort from 2012 to 2025. Caliterra’s less expensive Reserva lineup did not move me but the Tribute portfolio was excellent. Each of the wines spent 14 months in French and American oak.Importer: A.V.
