Opaque ruby-black in color, the 2021 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard begins with deep cassis aromas that take time to unwind to tobacco, charcuterie and coffee tones. The full-bodied palate features loads of floral fruit and pleasantly chewy tannins, and it has just enough rounded acidity to lift the finish.

Deep ruby-purple in color, the 2019 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard offers fresh blackcurrant and blueberry fruit on the nose with touches of earth, charcuterie and dried flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant touch of chew and lots of fresh uplift on the finish. 700 cases were made.

Inky purple-black in color, the 2018 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard has lush scents of cassis, cedar, menthol and turned earth with floral notes and a touch of tar. The palate is full-bodied with dense fruits, although the frame is fine and grainy, and it has just enough freshness to support the long, dense finish. Give it more time in bottle.

The 2017 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard was bottled three weeks before I tasted it but is nonetheless showing beautifully. It has a very deep purple-black, opaque color and nose of crème de cassis, black cherry liqueur, cracked black pepper, bacon fat, savory green and black olive, violet, lilac, perfumed earth and tons of blue fruit jam notes. Full-bodied, rich and savory, it features wonderful black and blue fruit layers with tons of floral and savory perfume, very firm, chewy tannins, great freshness and a very long, savory finish. 700 cases produced.

Generous and dramatic, the 2016 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard is quite different in profile from Turley's Petite Syrahs (they don't spell it "Sirah") from the North Coast, bursting from the glass with a rich bouquet of balsamic cherry, dark fruit compote and grilled meat. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and expansive, with plush but abundant tannins, juicy acids and an ample core of fruit.
