Although it is not a Napa Valley wine, Spottswoode has entered the Rhone Ranger sweepstakes with this blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache from the limestone soils of the Terra Bella Vineyard in Paso Robles. A limited production cuvee, the 2008 Field Book Terra Bella Vineyard boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as vivid black raspberry and black cherry fruit characteristics. This medium-bodied, fully mature 2008 is unlikely to improve, but it will offer delicious drinking over the next 1-3 years. This historic estate, tucked behind the town of St. Helena in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, was established in 1882, and is run by one of the grand ladies of Napa, Mary Novak, along with her daughter, Beth. These have long been very good, classic wines, but over the last 10-15 years their quality has soared into the upper echelon of the Napa hierarchy.Tel. (707) 963-0134
