    The medium to deep ruby-purple colored 2016 Pinot Noir Homer opens with alcoholic heat on the nose over aromas of black and blue fruit, tilled soil and cinnamon stick. It's full-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and tons of ripe black fruit, lagging a bit in freshness and finishing with alcoholic heat. 241 cases produced.

    Pale to medium ruby in color with a touch of purple, the 2014 Pinot Noir Homer offers up intense red currant and red cherry notes with hints of spice box and forest floor. Medium-bodied, softly structured and with a good amount of ripe red berry and spicy flavors, it has a lively backbone and good length.

    The 2013 Pinot Noir Homer includes both pre- and post-storm pickings. It has an elegant bouquet with dark berry fruit, bergamot and forest floor scents - complex and quite absorbing. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry, good density in the mouth, very harmonious, although I actually find a little more tension in the Block 7 and Block 23 this year. The finish has a touch of truffle coming through with good weight and it should drink well for the next 10-12 years.

    The 2012 Pinot Noir Homer comes from four vineyard blocks picked October 7-10 and includes 9% whole-cluster fruit, matured in 68% new French oak, this cuvée a selection of the best barrels, particularly those with a dark fruited profile. It has an outgoing, well-defined bouquet with mulberry, dark plum, orange blossom and mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe and quite succulent tannin, slightly grainy in texture with black cherries and blackcurrant notes infused with white pepper and red peppercorn. There is impressive depth and concentration here, if not quite the persistence that the nose deserves.

    The 410 cases of Shea Cellars 2011 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard Homer reflect barrels from three blocks, none of which were subjected to solo bottlings, and is at 13.7% alcohol the highest of its collection. Rutabaga and radish earthily and bitingly scent and flavor the juicy fresh cherry, red currant and red raspberry on display here. A lovely sense of tannic refinement; of transparency to stony and forest floor nuances; and of energy makes this long-lingering Pinot another impressive exemplar of its vintage likely to reward return visits through at least 2022. New Zealander Blair Trathen (formerly with Rex Hill) inherited Shea’s winemaking mantle from Drew Voit in the spring of last year, so the 2011s here were still largely Voit’s work. Their picking took place from the third weeks in October through November 2. “We did wave upon wave of crop-dropping and sorting,” reports Dick Shea, Aand potential alcohols were the lowest we’ve ever had,” the musts being chaptalized by a fairly constant amount to leave finished alcohol levels of between 13.0 and 13.7%. “Given high malic and low pH,” remarked Trathen, “these wines took a long time to chug through malo-lactic fermentation.” But, as usual, all of them were bottled in August, meaning more than a month younger – not to mention much closer to the termination of malo-lactic – than would usually be the case. (As explained in my introduction to this report, what that might mean for their bottle evolution – and that of so many other Willamette Pinots in a similar situation – I’m not prepared to speculate.) Also as usual, the Block 23 and Homer bottlings will have been released this fall (following on the heels of the Estate and West Hill), while Block 7 won’t be released before the end of this year or early next.
