Schubert's 2016 Syrah spent three years in 35% new French oak, which accounts for it being the current release in early 2020. Yes, there are considerable cedary overtones, but they in no way detract from the vibrant peppery aromas or vibrant cherry fruit. One might even argue that they add a dark-earthy, savory note to this medium to full-bodied wine, which features a rich, velvety texture on the palate that slowly fades to a soft dustiness on the lingering finish. One of the region's best Syrahs to date, it should drink well for at least a decade.

From what has turned out to be a terrific vintage for Martinborough, Schubert's 2014 Syrah offers an explosive nose of cracked pepper, violets and dark fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a creamy mid-palate and long, silky finish, echoing with spice, plums and cola. It shows the considerable potential of Syrah in this relatively cool climate when conditions are just right.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2008 Syrah gives intense aromas of kirsch, blackberry pie and blueberry tart with underlying black pepper, anise and mocha notes plus a hint of smoky bacon. Full bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it offers layers of peppered blackberry and savory flavors supported by firm rounded tannins and crisp acid. The 2007 Syrah spent 25 months in oak, 40% new. Deep garnet in color, it is intensely peppery with an undercurrent of red berry/blackberry aromas plus some loam and sandalwood. Full bodied with generous spicy fruit supported a medium level of very fine tannins and refreshing acid, the finish is very spicy. Drink it now to 2016. 197 cases were made.
