The 2015 Pinot Noir Turner Vineyard has a pale to medium ruby color and nose of peppered meats, blueberries, warm blackberries, bergamot, moss-covered bark, dried rose petals, crushed strawberries and warm raspberries with tobacco hints. Light to medium-bodied, it opens saline and soft, fleshing out to those savory flavors, with lightly chewy tannins and mouthwatering freshness, circling back to finish on a long, intense saline note. How pretty!

The 2014 Pinot Noir Turner Vineyard displays a pale to medium ruby-purple color and subtle dried herbs, underbrush and mossy bark notes over a core of pomegranate, raspberry leaves, fresh cranberries and dried flowers. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is taut and firm at this youthful stage, giving glimpses of the pretty perfume and earthy goodness to come. Give this one a good couple of years to emerge and drink it over the next ten.

Mint, bay leaf, underbrush and mushroom notes all emerge from the 2013 Pinot Noir Turner Vineyard, and it's one of the more rustic, chewy wines in the lineup. Medium-bodied, with firm, dry tannin, I'd give bottles a year, then drink up.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Turner Vineyard is downright Burgundian and reveals lots of sour cherry, forest floor, wild herbs and sweet spice to go with a medium-bodied, beautifully pure and elegant style on the palate. Seeing 40% stems and 20 months in 50% new French oak (which it's absorbed every trace of), drink this character-loaded, pure, fresh and balanced Pinot over the coming 7-8 years. While there's less stem influence here than in the Las Hermanas and Rancho La Vina, this still has plenty of feral and wild gaminess on both the nose and palate.

Another stunning wine, the 2010 Pinot Noir Turner Vineyard boasts gorgeous purity and depth in its sweet dark cherries, flowers and spices. All the aromas and flavors are beautifully woven together, but it is the wine’s striking inner perfume and fragrance that are most appealing. Persistent veins of minerality add brightness on the superb finish. The Turner was made with 50% whole clusters. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Samsara is without question one of the hottest boutique wineries in California’s Central Coast. Proprietor Chad Melville splits his time between Samsara and his family’s Melville estate, an approach that seems to work. The 2010s are the product of a very cold year with heat spikes in October. Except for the Rita’s Crown, the Pinots were harvested in October, but before the spikes. The Syrahs (which I will revie next year) were picked much later, into December in some cases, and benefited from the kick of heat earlier in the growing season. Overall, yields were down dramatically, but that may have turned out to be a positive, as normal yields might not have ripened under these conditions. The wines were fermented with natural yeasts, and bottled without fining or filtration. Melville used 25-100% whole clusters for most of the wines. The top selections saw a maximum of 50% new oak.
