The 2020 Chardonnay Vintner Select opens with soft-spoken notions of fresh grapefruit, Bosc pears and yellow apples, leading to hints of coriander seed, sea spray and lime leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate offers tightly knit citrus and apple layers with loads of mineral accents and a racy backbone, finishing long and savory. 289 cases were made.

The 2019 Chardonnay Vintner Select has a wonderfully fragrant nose of peach blossoms, acacia honey, beeswax and toasted almonds over a core of fresh grapefruit, green guava, mandarin peel and spice cake with a waft of ginger. The medium to full-bodied palate has lovely poise, featuring intense citrus and tropical fruit flavors matched by a lively backbone and a satiny texture, finishing with loads of savory accents.

Made with about one-third malolactic, the 2018 Chardonnay Vintner Select jumps out of the glass with expressive notions of apricot preserves, honeydew melon and green guava with hints of almond croissant, beeswax, honeysuckle and ginger. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating savory goodness and tropical fruit layers, framed with a lovely oiliness to the texture and plenty of freshness, finishing long and spicy. 350 cases produced.

This is always a gigantic wine, and its success depends on technically balancing its various parts. The 2010 delivers the usual richness, with vast, deep fruit, mineral, oak and leesy flavors. It’s as full bodied as a red wine, but a little heavy for a Chardonnay. Not an ager, it’s best enjoyed now with the richest Chardonnay-friendly dishes. — (7/1/2012) —90
