Despite being labeled 13.5% alcohol, Neudorf's 2017 Moutere Pinot Noir is impressively rich and full-bodied, with velvety tannins that seem to coat the palate without drying it out. Plum and cola notes, plus hints of wood spice, vanilla and loam, provide ample complexity and flavor interest, finishing long, with echoes of wintergreen and forest floor.

Fuller and richer than the Tom's Block, the 2016 Moutere Pinot Noir delivers layers of dark cherries and velvety tannins. It's medium to full-bodied, with a plush mouthfeel and plenty of nuance and length on the finish. It should drink well for a decade or more.

There are just over 400 cases of the standout 2015 Moutere Pinot Noir. Coming off the region's clay-based soils, it offers plenty of volume and power without sacrificing purity of fruit. Black cherries, cola and savory, meaty notes all combine in a dark whirl of flavor that's framed by supple tannins. Hints of cardamom, cinnamon and clove linger on the silky finish.

This is consistently one of the most distinctive, conisstent and complex pinot noir wines made in New Zealand. This Upper Moutere wine is always a deeper style of pinot that has an engaging interplay of richness and freshness. Acidity holds powerful fruit bright and the tannins are deeply layered. Smells of dark cherry, plum and blackberry, some gentle earthy notes and a little graphite. The oak is deeply buried in concentrated fruit and the integrated spices are entrancing. The palate has a texture that draws you in. Tannins suspended in layers of ripe and deep rich fruit, smooth pastry-like layering, plenty of baking spices and hints of chocolate. The acidity surges up and launches the finish in an exuberant style. Brilliant focus, length and purity. This is right on form. Drink in 2018.
