2016 was a very good overall vintage in Priorat, and for Mas d'en Gil, it was considered exceptional. They are releasing their two top reds from this vintage, starting with the expressive, powerful, mature and polished 2016 Coma Vella, which is very harmonious and shows developed aromas and subtle flavors. It has the rusticity of Priorat and the elegance of the balanced vintages with time in bottle.

The red blend 2015 Coma Vella is a blend of 70% Garnacha Peluda and Garnacha del País, 20% Cari?ena and 10% Syrah from vines planted between 1965 and 1998 on classical sloped llicorella slate soils except the Syrah, which is on limestone soils. They used 10% to 20% full clusters for the fermentation in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It matured for one year in a combination of 225-liter barrels and 1,500- and 3,000-liter oak vats with only 15% to 20% new oak. The wine shows contained ripeness, showcasing the style of the south of Priorat, and it's spicy and a little earthy. It has a medium to full-bodied palate and some dusty tannins without the finesse of the newest reds. 35,658 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2016.

The red 2014 Coma Vella feels a tad rustic in the context of the 2016s, which show great finesse. It is a blend of Garnacha with 20% Cari?ena and 10% Syrah from the Coma Valley within the Mas d'en Gil property. It fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak vats, and the wine matured in 225-, 1,500- and 3,000-liter oak barrels and vats for one year. It has some earthy notes reminiscent of the dusty Priorat roads, integrated oak and good ripeness but without excess. The palate is medium-bodied with dusty tannins and a dry, serious and mineral finish. Impressive. 35,658 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2016. It's evolving quite slowly.

The 2013 Coma Vella is a blend of Garnacha with 20% Cari?ena and 10% Syrah from the Coma valley within the Mas d'en Gil property. It fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak vats, and the wine matured in 225-, 1,500- and 3,000-liter French and Austrian oak barrels and vats for one year. It's very classical and serious, without any excess, quite balanced, subtle, earthy and spicy. The palate is medium-bodied with some dusty, fine-grained tannins and some rusticity that provides character. 35,618 bottles were filled in May 2015.
