Notes of sweet berries, spices, woodsmoke, orange rind and forest floor introduce the 2019 Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois, a medium to full-bodied, lively wine that's framed by chalky tannins. As ever, this classically balanced red is one of the sleepers in Leroux's portfolio.

The 2018 Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce Sous Le Bois is another of the highlights of this year's collection, exhibiting aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, earthy forest floor and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly chalky and nicely concentrated, with fine depth at the core and a sapid, penetrating finish.

The 2015 Blagny 1er Cru La Piece Sous Le Bois has a very composed bouquet expressing fine mineralité here with undergrowth scents. This conveys real personality, a red Burgundy you want to get to know. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, great tension, plenty of nervosité with a fresh blackberry and bilberry finish that feels long and tensile. This is just superb - a Blagny that used its cooler microclimate to its advantage.

The 2014 Blagny 1er Cru La Piece Sous Bois comes from a less recognised part of the C?te de Beaune, in the upper reaches of the slope towards the wood. Benjamin remarked that with global warming, perhaps one day in the future it will become the most desirable enclave of Burgundy. It has a crisp, blackberry and raspberry-scented bouquet with a faint, cool seaweed tang in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, sappy red berry fruit with good acidity, just a dash of black pepper towards the finish. Enjoy this over 5-6 years.
