The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village reveals appealing aromas of red berries, plums, spices and loamy soil, followed by a medium-bodied palate with lively acids but rather chewy, somewhat rustic tannins on this showing. Perhaps it was just out of sorts when I tasted it.

The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin Villages was two-thirds in tank and the remainder in a single foudre. There are scents of Bakewell tart and bilberry on the nose, nicely defined and pretty, almost Chambolle-esque. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, a fine structure behind it with a tightly wound, slightly attenuated finish that will open up with bottle age. One to watch!

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin Villages is Benjamin's main village cuvée that constitutes over 9,000 bottles, mostly sourced from Les Sevrées and La Justice (two-thirds and one-third respectively). It has a crisp, blackberry and redcurrant-scented bouquet with a touch of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannin, fine acidity and poise with good depth on the fleshy finish. This is a commendable village cru, the kind you would instantly whip off a restaurant list.

The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Villages has a tightly wound redcurrant and cranberry nose, a little reserved, but then again it had not been racked. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little rustic perhaps, but it has a cohesive, perhaps easy-drinking finish.

The malolactic had finished only a month before I tasted the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Village. It has a surprisingly introverted bouquet with crisp blackberry leaf and raspberry preserve scents. The palate is ripe and grippy on the entry, plenty of black fruit and a saline finish that begs another sip. Give this a year in bottle, but don't be surprised if it lasts several years or more because there is real substance here.
