    From a vineyard in the Awatere Valley, the 2014 Ward Farm Pinot Noir is in its drinking window. Leafy hints of tomato combine on the nose with meaty-savory notes and beet root. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky, supple and long, a fine example of mature Awatere Pinot Noir.

    The 2009 Ward Farm Pinot Gris comes from a relatively cool site close to the sea. Hand-picked and whole cluster pressed, it also gets a stainless start and then indigenous yeast finish the ferment in barrel. Peach and Golden Delicious apple scented, it has a fragrant undercurrent of honeysuckle and a funky whiff. Dry, medium bodied, crisp, it has a subtly flavored, well balanced and silken textured palate, finishing long. Drink it now to 2013. Former chief winemaker at Seresin, Brian Bicknell set up his own Mahi label in 2001 with an aim to use his considerable knowledge and experience of the lay of the Marlborough lands to focus on crafting wines of single vineyard expressions. In 2006 he purchased the Cellier Le Brun winery to use as his base and gave it an impressively understated makeover. The five vineyards that Brian oversees are all certified organic. Total production is a small yet respectable 14,000 cases per annum of premium wines that are truly punching above their price weights in terms of individual character and intrinsic quality.Importer: Maverick Wine Co, Bensenville, IL; tel.     Sourced close to the sea in the Awatere Valley, hand picked and whole cluster pressed, the 2007 Ward Farm Pinot Gris has a beguiling nose of rosewater and pear drops and a delicate palate with hints of wild strawberry on the finish – a lovely Pinot Gris that demonstrates what this somewhat maligned grape can achieve. Respected winemaker Brian Bicknell established Mahi (meaning “our work, our craft”) in 2001 having made wine at Errazuriz in Chile and then undertaking much consultancy work in Marlborough in the late 1990’s, including Seresin amongst others. He first acquired the 1.5 hectares Byrne vineyard containing Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, his approach to make a natural, “hands-off” style of wine and in 2003 he began sourcing fruit from the Twins Vineyard in the Wairau Valley planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But it was not until he resigned his consultancy commitments in 2006 that he could devote himself fully to Mahi. These are exciting wines crafted by a man with great experience.
