The Tenute Lunelli 2017 Montefalco Sagrantino Tenuta Castelbuono Carapace (with 4,000 bottles produced) is a generous and richly concentrated wine from a scorching hot vintage. I tasted the 2017 edition next to the 2016 (that was previously reviewed) and find this bottle to be slightly thinner and shorter in terms of mouthfeel. However, the intensity of those Sagrantino aromas is stronger here with toasted spice, cinnamon, nutmeg and dark fruit. This wine ages in large oak casks for 24 months.

A terrific Umbrian red for a mixed platter of barbecued meats in autumn, the Tenute Lunelli 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino Tenuta Castelbuono Carapace opens to a thick, rich appearance and sits heavy in the glass with dark garnet hues. It delivers deep, dark, bold richness and an opulent full-bodied style, topped off with cinnamon clove and baker's chocolate. The tannins are softened, and the wine ends on a sweetly succulent note. Some 78,000 bottles were made.
