Deep ruby-purple, the 2016 Isosceles Reserve features blue and black fruit on the nose with accents of forest floor, licorice and mint chocolate coming through with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with intense, perfumed flavor layers, bursts of refreshing acidity and a long, spicy finish.

Composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, the 2013 Isosceles Reserve gives a very deep garnet-black color and nose of crème de cassis, baked black berries, dried mulberries and preserved plums with hints of cedar box and Provence herbs, plus a waft of rare beef. The full-bodied palate is still wearing a lot of oak, with very firm, chewy tannins supporting the ripe fruit, finishing on a woody note.

Coming from a cool vintage, the 2011 Isosceles Reserve is still a big, rich Paso Cabernet that reveals ample blackcurrants, black raspberry, leather and savory spice on the nose. Nicely concentrated on the palate, yet relatively focused and straight, with moderate breadth and a touch of chewy tannin, give it year or two and plan on drinking bottles by 2025.

The star of the show, the 2010 Isosceles Reserve (90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot aged 21 months in 100% new French oak) is a deep, rich and muscular effort that still has some oak and tannin to integrate. Graphite, smoked dark fruits, exotic spice and sweet oak all emerge from this brilliant effort, and it hits the palate with a full-bodied, concentrated profile that carries layers of sweet tannin, solid mid-palate depth and a great finish. The tannin quality here is exceptional, and while it has no shortage of fruit, it retains a sense of elegance and balance. Give it 2-3 years in the cellar and drink it through 2025. These first-rate efforts are made by Scott Shirley, who made wine in Napa Valley for 13 years before coming to Paso Robles. Far more showy was a barrel sample of the 2008 Isosceles Reserve, composed of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It exhibits sweeter tannins along with dense black fruits intermixed with charcoal, creme de cassis, roasted herbs, and spice box. It is a big, thick, juicy, nearly over-the-top wine with impressive balance. (Not yet released) I was somewhat surprised that I had a pronounced preference for the 2008 over the 2007 Isosceles Reserve, a cuvee that ages uncommonly well for a Bordeaux varietal blend from Paso Robles.
