    Made with certified organic fruit, the Gulfi 2017 NeroBaronj is another single-vineyard expression of Nero d'Avola with a more accessible personality. This time the fruit comes from a three-hectare parcel with calcareous clay soils at 30 meters above sea level. This wine reveals rich fruit concentration with dark garnet coloring. The wine reflects the saturated character and power of this warm vintage, radiating with ripe blackberry, black cherry, spice, tar and black olive. Albeit extra dense, layered and a touch sweet in this vintage, this wine remains very faithful to this mighty Sicilian grape. Try it with lamb chops on the grill. Production is 9,400 bottles.

    The 2016 NeroBaronj is a dark and saturated expression with aromas of dried cherry, plum and licorice. The bouquet is direct and sharp, and the wine avoids some of those more distinctive Nero d'Avola aromas such as scorched earth and black olive. Those variety-driven aromas are downplayed here in favor of more direct or pungent fruit (with a touch of buoyant volatility). Some 6,500 bottles were made.

    Awarding us a peek back in time, the Gulfi 2014 NeroBaronj is a library release from a year that saw very good growing conditions on the island of Sicily. This certified organic wine is rich in texture with broad, full-sweeping aromas of dark fruit, plump cherry and plum. There is a touch of sweetness as well. The tannins are soft and the wine offer broad richness and dark concentration overall. Only 2,700 bottles were released.

    This is a slightly more austere and sophisticated expression among Gulfi's various single-vineyard expressions of Nero d'Avola. The 2013 Sicilia Nerobaronj delivers that same black-fruit ripeness that you get in the other wines; however, the bouquet in this wine is slightly sharper and more focused. Spice, tar and cured leather frame a dark core of black fruit. This is a thickly textured wine for medium-term consumption. The Baroni vineyard is distinguished by clay-limestone soils with white rocks. Only 6,800 bottles were made.

    The 2011 Nerobaronj flaunts its distinctive style and its impenetrable concentration. This pure expression of Nero d'Avola (that in this vintage is still an IGT wine) offers impressive layers of dark fruit, tar, road paving, Indian spice and barbecue spice. Despite the large impact of those blackish aromas, the wine offers a surprising level of pure fruit as well with blackberry and cherry at the font line. Thick lines and plush richness contribute to the wine's inner depth and intensity.
