The estate’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is built on a serious core of freshness or minerality. Freshly cut flowers, bright red berries and sweet spices burst from the glass. The 2011 is tense, wiry and full of energy. It will be interesting to see where this goes over the next year. There is plenty of promise, although the 2011 is naturally a smaller-scaled wine, in keeping with the personality of the year. This barrel sample is just the Cabernet component, so the final blend is likely to be quite different. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (Not yet released)Grassi is one of my favorite under the radar producers in Napa Valley. The estate excels with both Ribolla Gialla – a white grape native to Italy’s Friuli – and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is deeper, richer and darker than the 2008. Layers of expressive, radiant fruit emerge from this beautifully delineated Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 is a step up from the 2008. It shows greater mid-palate pliancy and terrific balance, while maintaining the signature house style. This is a fabulous showing. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is sleek and polished in its racy red fruit, mint, flowers and licorice. This is one of the more elegant 2008 Cabernets readers will come across. Bright red fruit and expressive floral notes are the signature elements in this mid-weight, gracious wine. The French oak is a bit obvious, suggesting this supple, forward wine is best enjoyed over the next few years. It is straightforward, yet delicious. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
