Closed with a red wax capsule, the organic and biodynamic Foradori 2020 Teroldego Sgarzon shows a pretty dark color and rich saturation. Aromas include dark fruit, red beets, iodine, mahogany and perfumed teak wood. The wine is very savory with iron ore and rust, showing dark consistency and a strong set of aromas.

From a vineyard with gravel and sandy soils, Foradori's 2018 Teroldego Sgarzon is floral and fruity with dried cherry, raspberry and wild rose. The wine is fermented in clay amphorae on the skins, and this adds a point of extra structure and determination. But the mouthfeel is lovely really, leaving a silky and polished impression. Sgarzon sports a leaner more compact style compared to some recent vintages of the past, but this wine maintains pretty elegance and balance throughout.

Tasted at the winery just a few weeks after its release, the 2017 Teroldego Sgarzon is a step above the 2016 vintage. You feel that extra heat and flavor intensity that seems to radiate off the primary fruit. This was a warm growing season, and the quality of aromas is more open, generous and immediate as a result. This wine is fermented on the skins in clay amphorae for six months. Aromas of dark fruit are followed by cigar smoke, scorched earth and wet clay. In the mouth, this vintage offers noticeable density and richness.

I absolutely enjoyed the 2016 Teroldego Sgarzon. I appreciated the wine even more when I learned of the hardships experienced in this vintage, which saw a nasty attack of downy mildew and other fungal-related problems after extended rains. The wine is made with 100% Teroldego that has been fermented in amphorae with six months of skin contact. This vintage appears bright and juicy with lots of the primary fruit intensity (complete with blackberry and dried blueberry) that you get with this grape. Earthy or savory notes of autumnal leaves, cured meat and tilled soil appear on the close. The finish is streamlined and tight. Some 12,000 bottles were made.

The 2015 Teroldego Sgarzon is slightly more delicate and subdued compared to the more exuberant Teroldego Morei. The Sgarzon single-vineyard is a luscious and generous red wine with dark fruit flavors, pressed rose petal, dry terra cotta and exotic spice. The effect is more understated here. There is a rustic touch of black olive and cured tobacco as well. This is a harmonious and very offbeat and interesting expression of Trentino's Teroldego grape.
